How to date a curvy woman, with respect

Updated October 19, 2026Curvy Match editorial teamHow we rate

Short answer

Treat her the way you would treat anyone you want a relationship with: be interested in her life, be proud to be seen with her, and keep comments about her body for later and for compliments that are about her, not her size. Plan dates somewhere comfortable for both of you, without making a point of it.

Start with why you messaged

Many plus-size women have been treated as a fetish on dating apps. In a 2025 survey of nearly 700 plus-size and mid-size women and non-binary people published by Butterfly Foundation, 54% said they had been fetishized on dating apps. So your first message is read carefully.

Open with something from her profile: the book in her photo, the city she mentioned, the joke in her bio. If your opener could only be sent to a woman of her size, rewrite it.

Compliments that work vs. compliments that hurt

The difference is whether the compliment is about her or about her category. These are illustrative examples, not quotes.

Lands wellLands badlyWhy
“You have a great laugh.”“I love big girls.”One is about her. The other makes her one of a type.
“That dress looks great on you.”“You're pretty for a big girl.”The qualifier is an insult with a compliment attached.
“I had a really good time tonight.”“You're not like the other big women I've dated.”Comparisons to a category are never flattering.
“You look beautiful.” (later, in person)Any comment about her weight, diet or what she ordersHer body is not a topic for negotiation.

Be seen with her

One of the most common complaints from plus-size women is men who are attentive in private and unavailable in public: no daytime plans, no friends, no photos. If you are interested, act like it. Suggest a weekend date. Introduce her to people when the time is right. Being proud of her is not a grand gesture. It is the baseline.

Comfortable dates, without making it a thing

Good planning is invisible. You do not need to ask “will you fit?” and you should not assume she cannot do things. You just choose well, the way you would for anyone.

  • Book a booth or a table with chairs without arms. Most restaurants will note it.
  • Pick places with easy parking or a short walk, and suggest them as options, not a decision you made for her.
  • For activities, offer a choice: “Bowling or the new food hall?” She knows what she enjoys.
  • If she suggests something active, say yes. Do not offer an easier version she did not ask for.
  • On flights, concerts or theaters later on, ask her preference on seats rather than guessing.

Condescension often looks like care. If you would not say it to a thin date, do not say it to her.

Things to leave alone

Do not comment on what she orders. Do not share your diet tips, your gym plan for her, or stories about your ex who lost weight. Do not ask if she has always been this size. Do not tell her she is brave for wearing something. Do not push for body photos before you have met. If she brings up her body, listen. Follow her lead on how much she wants to talk about it.

If you have a strong preference for bigger women

That is fine, and you do not have to hide it. Just keep it in proportion. Attraction is part of a relationship, not the whole of it. If you are not sure whether your messages come across as interest or fetish, read our guide on chaser red flags from her side of the screen.

Questions

  • Is it OK to say I prefer curvy women?

Yes, once and lightly, ideally after you have shown interest in her as a person. Leading with it tends to read as fetish.

  • Should I mention her size at all?

Not early. Compliment specific things: her smile, her style, how she makes you laugh. If she raises the topic, follow her lead.

  • How do I make sure the date venue is comfortable without being awkward?

Ask the venue for a booth or armless chairs when you book. Offer her two options for the date. That is all it takes.

  • What if she seems guarded at first?

Many plus-size women have had bad experiences on apps. Be consistent, make real plans and keep them. Trust follows.

  • Is “BBW” an insult?

Some women use it about themselves, others dislike it. Do not use it to address her unless she does.

Treat her the way you would treat anyone you want a relationship with: be interested in her life, be proud to be seen with her, and keep comments about her body for later and for compliments that are about her, not her size.
